Hand made in Nepal100% cotton

Grown from the Earth

A double helix is a trellis. Wildflowers climb it, vines wrap it, roses open on it. We cut that idea into cotton, dye it in open vats, print it with carved wood blocks and stitch it back together by hand.

The DNA hangtag: hand made in Nepal, 100% cotton, grown from the Earth.

Scroll — the vine keeps growing

Before it was trousers

A plant, and
five pairs of hands

Nothing on this site starts in a factory. Here is what happens to a cotton plant on its way to becoming something you can put on.

  1. Grown

    It starts in the dirt

Cotton is a shrub. It puts out a hard green pod that splits open into a fist of white fibre with the seeds still buried in it. Everything after that is an argument with that fist — how to get the seed out, how to get the fibre straight, how to twist it long enough to weave.

  2. Cut

    Then somebody cuts it up

Woven, it becomes khaddar — coarse hand-loom cotton. Then it is cut down again. Cloth left over from other runs is sorted by weave and by weight, and a pair begins as a heap of pieces that already had another life. There is no master layout. Somebody chooses which green sits beside which red, one leg at a time.

  3. Dyed

Then it goes in the vat

An open bath. Nothing sealed, nothing held at temperature. Panels come out streaked along the grain, because the weave drinks unevenly, and the same recipe on two different days gives two different greens. This is also why your first wash runs coloured — there is loose dye in the cloth.

  4. Printed

Then a hand presses wood into it

Moons, roses, butterflies, a mandala, an om, the eyes off the stupa — each one carved into a block of wood, inked, and struck onto the panel by eye. Ink pools on the edge that pressed hardest and starves on the edge that lifted first. Some prints run half off a seam.

  5. Sewn

And then it is beaten soft

Panels joined, pockets set, woven trim laid over the cargo, elastic into the waist and both ankles. Then the finished pair is stone washed until the cotton gives up its stiffness — which is why a new pair already feels a year old.
